I had a disturbing conversation with a spiritual friend today. She's old, like me, and says she's gone beyond emotion. A long time ago I would have thought that was cool. Who wants to feel all this turmoil and sadness, anger, all those things we humans go through a hundred times a day? Sounds like an advanced person.
Then I was thinking about Pema Chodron talking about how the goal isn't to get past emotion and never feel things. In her teachings the goal is to feel everything, and feel it so hard you think you're going to burst. Feel it, lean into it she says, till you meet that tender soft place inside you. When you can feel everything, and relate to others when they feel it too, it grows your heart and you can develop empathy for any one in those circumstances. Empathy is the real goal. It isn't about us, and how "advanced" we are. It's about everyone. We're all in it together in this human mess.
